University of Portland Commencement Speech

Wonderful, amazing speech!

Commencement Address to the Class of 2009
University of Portland, May 3rd, 2009
Paul Hawken

When I was invited to give this speech, I was asked if I could give a simple short talk that was “direct, naked, taut, honest, passionate, lean, shivering, startling, and graceful.” Boy, no pressure there.

But let’s begin with the startling part. Hey, Class of 2009: you are going to have to figure out what it means to be a human being on earth at a time when every living system is declining, and the rate of decline is accelerating. Kind of a mind-boggling situation – but not onepeer-reviewed paper published in the lastt thirty years can refute that statement.

Basically, the earth needs a new operating system, you are the programmers, and we need it within a few decades.

This planet came with a set of operating instructions, but we seem to have misplaced them. Important rules like don’t poison the water, soil, or air, and don’t let the earth get overcrowded, and don’t touch the thermostat have been broken. Buckminster Fuller said that spaceship earth was so ingeniously designed that no one has a clue that we are on one, flying through the universe at a million miles per hour, with no need for seatbelts, lots of room in coach, and really good food – but all that is changing.

There is invisibble writing on the back of the diploma you will receive, and in case you didn’t bring lemon juice to decode it, I can tell you what it says: YOU ARE BRILLIANT, AND THE EARTH IS HIRING. The earth couldn’t afford to send any recruiters or limos to your school. It sent you rain, sunsets, ripe cherries, night blooming jasmine, and that unbelievably cute person you are dating. Take the hint. And here’s the deal: Forget that this task of planet-saving is not possible in the time required. Don’t be put off by people who know what is not possible. Do what needs to be done, and check to see if it was impossible only after you are done.

When asked if I am pessimistic or optimistic about the future, my answer is always the same: If you look at the science about what is happening on earth and aren’t pessimistic, you don’t understand data. But if you meet the people who are working to restore this earth and the lives of the poor, and you aren’t optimistic, you haven’t got a pulse. What I see everywhere in the world are ordinary people willing to confront despair, power, and incalculable odds in order to restore some semblance of grace, justice, and beauty to this world. The poet Adrienne Rich wrote, “So much has been destroyed I have cast my lot with those who, age after age, perversely, with no extraordinary power, reconstitute the world.” There could be no better description. Humanity is coalescing. It is reconstituting the world, and the action is taking place in schoolrooms, farms, jungles, villages, campuses, companies, refuge camps, deserts, fisheries, and slums.

You join a multitude of caring people. No one knows how many groups and organizations are working on the most salient issues of our day: climate change, poverty, deforestation, peace, water, hunger, conservation, human rights, and more. This is the largest movement the world has ever seen.

Rather than control, it seeks connection. Rather than dominance, it strives to disperse concentrations of power. Like Mercy Corps, it works behind the scenes and gets the job done. Large as it is, no one knows the true size of this movement. It provides hope, support, and meaning to billions of people in the world. Its clout resides in idea, not in force. It is made up of teachers, children, peasants, businesspeople, rappers, organic farmers, nuns, artists, government workers, fisherfolk, engineers, students, incorrigible writers, weeping Muslims, concerned mothers, poets, doctors without borders, grieving Christians, street musicians, the President of the United States of America, and as the writer David James Duncan would say, the Creator, the One who loves us all in such a huge way.

There is a rabbinical teaching that says if the world is ending and the Messiah arrives, first plant a tree, and then see if the story is true. Inspiration is not garnered from the litanies of what may befall us; it resides in humanity’s willingness to restore, redress, reform, rebuild, recover, reimagine, and reconsider. “One day you finally knew what you had to do, and began, though the voices around you kept shouting their bad advice,” is Mary Oliver’s description of moving away from the profane toward a deep sense of connectedness to the living world.

Millions of people are working on behalf of strangers, even if the evening news is usually about the death of strangers. This kindness of strangers has religious, even mythic origins, and very specific eighteenth-century roots. Abolitionists were the first people to create a national and global movement to defend the rights of those they did not know. Until that time, no group had filed a grievance except on behalf of itself. The founders of this movement were largely unknown – Granville Clark, Thomas Clarkson, Josiah Wedgwood – and their goal was ridiculous on the face of it: at thatt time three out of four people in the world were enslaved. Enslaving each other was what human beings had done for ages. And the abolitionist movement was greeted with incredulity. Conservative spokesmen ridiculed the abolitionists as liberals, progressives, do-gooders, meddlers, and activists. They were told they would ruin the economy and drive England into poverty. But for the first time in history a group of people organized themselves to help people they would never know, from whom they would never receive direct or indirect benefit. And today tens of millions of people do this every day. It is called the world of non-profits, civil society, schools, social entrepreneurship, and non-governmental organizations, of companies who place social and environmental justice at the top of their strategic goals. The scope and scale of this effort is unparalleled inhistory.

The living world is not “out there” somewhere, but in your heart. What do we know about life? In the words of biologist Janine Benyus, life creates the conditions that are conducive to life. I can think of no better motto for a future economy. We have tens of thousands of abandoned homes without people and tens of thousands of abandoned people without homes. We have failed bankers advising failed regulators on how to save failed assets. Think about this: we are the only species on this planet without full employment. Brilliant. We have an economy that tells us that it is cheaper to destroy earth in real time than to renew, restore, and sustain it. You can print money to bail out a bank but you can’t print life to bail out a planet. At present we are stealing the future, selling it in the present, and calling it gross domestic product. We can just as easily have an economy that is based on healing the future instead of stealing it. We can either create assets for the future or take the assets of the future. One is called restoration and the other exploitation. And whenever we exploit the earth we exploit people and cause untold suffering. Working for the earth is not a way to get rich, it is a way to be rich.

The first living cell came into being nearly 40 million centuries ago, and its direct descendants are in all of our bloodstreams. Literally you are breathing molecules this very second that were inhaled by Moses, Mother Teresa, and Bono. We are vastly interconnected. Our fates are inseparable. We are here because the dream of every cell is to become two cells. In each of you are one quadrillion cells, 90 percent of which are not human cells. Your body is a community, and without those other microorganisms you would perish in hours. Each human cell has 400 billion molecules conducting millions of processes between trillions of atoms. The total cellular activity in one human body is staggering: one septillion actions at any one moment, a one with twenty-four zeros after it. In a millisecond, our body has undergone ten times more processes than there are stars in the universe – exactly what Charles Darwin foretold when he said science would discover that each living creature was a “little universe, formed of a host of self-propagating organisms, inconceivably minute and as numerous as the stars of heaven.”

So I have two questions for you all: First, can you feel your body? Stop for a moment. Feel your body. One septillion activities going on simultaneously, and your body does this so well you are free to ignore it, and wonder instead when this speech will end. Second question: who is in charge of your body? Who is managing those molecules? Hopefully not a political party. Life is creating the conditions that are conducive to life inside you, just as in all of nature. What I want you to imagine is that collectively humanity is evincing a deep innate wisdom in coming together to heal the wounds and insults of the past.

Ralph Waldo Emerson once asked what we would do if the stars only came out once every thousand years. No one would sleep that night, of course. The world would become religious overnight. We would be ecstatic, delirious, made rapturous by the glory of God. Instead the stars come out every night, and we watch television.

This extraordinary time when we are globally aware of each other and the multiple dangers that threaten civilization has never happened, not in a thousand years, not in ten thousand years. Each of us is as complex and beautiful as all the stars in the universe. We have done great things and we have gone way off course in terms of honoring creation. You are graduating to the most amazing, challenging, stupefying challenge ever bequested to any generation. The generations before you failed. They didn’t stay up all night. They got distracted and lost sight of the fact that life is a miracle every moment of your existence. Nature beckons you to be on her side. You couldn’t ask for a better boss. The most unrealistic person in the world is the cynic, not the dreamer. Hopefulness only makes sense when it doesn’t make sense to be hopeful. This is your century. Take it and run as if your life depends on it.”

Reflections - How Lucky Can You Get?

Reflections - How Lucky Can You Get?

I met an artist who creates crafts with four-leaf clovers, which she uses to adorn gift boxes, bookmarks, and other inventive items. When I asked her how she finds all of these prizes, she explained, "I just have a knack for it. On my last expedition, I found 150 four-leaf clovers." "That's amazing!" I replied. "How long did it take you to find them?" "About fifteen minutes," she answered.

I was astounded. If you have every searched for four-leaf clovers, you have likely found perhaps one or two in a fifteen-minute stint. She found 150! How lucky can you get?

The answer has nothing to do with luck, and everything to do with belief, expectation, motivation, intention, and focus. The universe is abundant with all things, and it will happily deliver whatever you seek-- if your mind is open to receive and you are sufficiently attuned to the object of your desire.

While many people ascribe the results of their efforts to luck, fate, karma, astrological influences, and a gamut of external sources, experience is determined more by consciousness than any other factor. The artist I described is so immersed in four-leaf clover consciousness that the clovers show up practically everywhere she looks.

You, too, are finding plenty of what you are looking for. You can tell what you are looking for by what you are finding. If you are finding love, joy, connection, creativity, and celebration, that is what you are looking for. If you are finding separation, upset, fear, pain, and conflict, that is what you are looking for. The Law of Attraction is drawing unto you that which is a match to the vision you are using.

You can change what you are getting by shifting your attention to objects you truly value. Your attention is the strongest currency at your disposal. Whatever you point it at grows. So quit thinking, feeling, and talking about what you have gotten that you don't want, and think, feel, and talk about what you do want. You will be amazed at how quickly the universe rearranges itself to accommodate your picture of reality!

I met a woman who had been told by a doctor that she had six months to live. She went home and decided that if she wanted to live, she would have to entirely change the way she was thinking about her life. So she switched from resistance to flow; from disdain to appreciation; and from fear to trust. That was many years ago. Her disease disappeared and health found its rightful place in her world. All positive change begins with attitudinal upgrade.

Thomas Jefferson declared, "I find that the harder I work, the more luck I have." I would replace the "hard work" phrase with, "the more I focus my consciousness on success." Have you noticed that people who have bad luck seem to keep having it? And people who have good luck seem to keep having it? That's because those with bad luck keep focusing on the bad, and those who have good luck keep focusing on the good. If people with bad luck started to focus on the good, their "luck" would change.

In an episode of the Northern Exposure television series, Shelly received a chain letter promising that if she sent a copy of the letter to five friends within the next day, her entire life would change for the better. So she mailed the letters, and immediately good things started to happen to her. Unexpected money showed up, she met a nice man, and she felt great. The letter worked!

A few days later Shelly returned to the post office, where the postmaster handed her the letters and informed her that he could not dispatch them because they had insufficient postage. Stunned, Shelley declared, "Maybe I'm in charge of my own life after all."

In the Bible we are told that we are created in the image and likeness of God. This means that we have the power to create what we choose. That power lives in your thoughts, intentions, and imagination. When Olympic superstar Michael Phelps was interviewed after winning his umpteenth gold medal, the interviewer asked him to what he attributed his success. Phelps answered, "Partly to my imagination. I think constantly about winning the gold." Of course he trained a great deal, as well. But his mind training is as important as the laps he swims.

How many four leaf clovers are out there? As many as you look for and you are open to receive. This principle applies as well to wonderful mates, jobs, and buyers for your house. "Seek, and you will find. Ask, and it is given. Knock, and it shall be opened to you." The laws of manifestation are solid, reliable, and unbiased. They will gladly work in your favor if you understand how to use them and you apply them consistently. Then you won't need "the Luck of the Irish." You will have the consciousness of a creator.

Abraham-Hicks - Law of Attraction

Is harmony one note that everybody is singing? Or is it a whole lot of notes that are in vibrational harmony with each other? When you give your attention to anything, the Universe responds to it. When two of you are giving your attention to it, and there is no contradiction, it is a powerful vortex. That's why a gathering such as this can achieve a great deal as you come together in greater and greater harmony and take thought beyond that which it has been before.

Whatever you're thinking about is literally like planning a future event. When you're worrying, you are planning. When you are appreciating, you are planning...What are you planning?

To hold someone as your object of attention while you're connected to Source Energy, is the greatest gift that anyone could give. When you're not happy, you don't have anything to give. And so, what it literally means is be happy, because you cannot give anyone something that you do not feel

When you say "Yes" to something, you include something you do want in your experience. When you say "No" to something, you include something you don't want in your experience.

Hypothetically, people worry about everyone being selfishly oriented. "If everyone did exactly what they want to do, what kind of world would this be?" And we say, a really, really good one. Because if everyone did what they wanted to do, everyone would feel free. And if you feel free, you feel empowered. And every negative emotion that exists—hear this—every negative emotion that exists is because there is some sense of loss of freedom somewhere in there.

We are on the brink of a whole new paradigm of understanding about creation.

I want it, but to have it, I must release it. And in the releasing of it, it comes easily.

It's all about the energy, not about the thing. But if it isn't for the thing, the energy doesn't move.

But when the energy is moving and I'm not letting myself go, then I'm out of balance.

And when I'm not in balance, I don't feel good. And there are not enough things in the world to fill that void.

Just describe it until it moves you emotionally and then the Universe
has to deliver it to you. You've been a little too practical; we want
you to stop facing reality.
Get over that what-is-it is and start telling it as you want it to be.
Your stories must be based on how
you want it to be, not how things are. That's the way you give up
control. When you talk about how things are, you can't help but try
to get in there and figure out what to do about it. When you tell the
story of what's becoming, you give up control of what is because you
can't be out there in your future controlling it. It will
automatically cause you to release those gripping, resistant,
controlling hands and it put you in the care of the universal forces
that create worlds."

San Francisco, 8/10/08
There are as many different worlds as there are perceivers or Beings or individuals. You are not here to create one world where everyone is the same, wanting and getting the same. You are here to be that which you want to be, while you allow all others to be that which they want to be.

In the same way that there is not an instant wanted thing
manifesting in your experience, there is not instant unwanted thing
happening in your experience. It takes some adapting to vibrations.
If you've managed to hold anything, wanted or unwanted,
for 17 seconds -- there is a coalescing of thought
that takes you a little closer to the vibration of whatever you are
turning your attention to. Those 17 second increments,
are not discernable. And that's why, when you get into that place,
it feels like instant manifestation. Just like when you get into
that negative place, it feels like instant manifestation.
It's like, "Where did that come from? Seemed like it just sort of snuck up on me,"
instead of snuck up over a long time. ABRAHAM

We would like you to release the word "achieve" or "earn" from your vocabulary and from your understanding, altogether, and we would like you to replace those words with the word "allow". You're wanting to allow your Well-being, not achieve it. It's not something that you need to earn. All you have to do is decide what it is you would like to experience, and then allow it in order to achieve it. It isn't something you have to struggle for or try for. You are all worthy beings. You are deserving of this Well-being.

Your life is right now! It's not later! It's not in that time of retirement. It's not when the lover gets here. It's not when you've moved into the new house. It's not when you get the better job. Your life is right now. It will always be right now. You might as well decide to start enjoying your life right now, because it's not ever going to get better than right now--until it gets better right now!

Were You Born 1930-1979?

For those Born 1930-1979

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED the 1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's!!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get
tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs
covered with bright colored lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when
we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.

As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, booster
seats, seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank Kool-aid made with
sugar, but we weren't overweight because, WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back
when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down
the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 150
channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's, no cell phones, no personal computer! s, no Internet or chat rooms.......

WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We climbed to the top of trees, fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis
balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.

we played war with the BB guns down at the little creek.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them!

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to
learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They
actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers
and inventors ever!

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!

If YOU are one of them -- CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good.

While you are at it, copy it and send this to your kids so they will know how brave (and lucky) their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it?!

The quote of the month is by Jay Leno: 'With hurricanes, tornadoes, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks, are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance? '

For those that prefer to think that God is not watching over us...go ahead and
ignore this. For the rest of us...copy and pass this on.

Find the vibrational essence of what you are looking for

The Universe has 10 or 20 or 30 or 40 or 50 or 100 or a thousand
options lined up to accommodate you and what you want.

You just have to get in the vortex. You have to tell the story of what you want
until you do not have a vibrational difference between the story that
you are offering and the story of what's in the vortex.

You've got to find the vibrational essence of what you are looking for and when you do, it must come to you, it cannot defy you, it cannot be denied you,it must come, it is Law, you see.

We want you to get in the vortex not because you have to get there for the stuff to manifest. We want you to get into the vortex because it feels so good in the vortex.

Knowing feels so much better than not knowing.

Knowledge of what you desire is delicious while doubting is contradiction of who you are.

People Are Rejecting Convential Wisdom

Now here are some examples of conventional wisdom. This is what most people believe:

  • That government will not lie or allow an economic depression.
  • That history as taught in schools or history books is truth.
  • That pharmaceuticals sell good drugs that aid cures.
  • That vaccinations bring immunity.
  • That they can "catch" disease from someone else—germ theory.
  • That the cure for cancer is just around the corner.
  • When a child is sick, he needs antibiotics.
  • When a child has fever, he needs Tylenol.
  • Hospitals are safe and clean.
  • That drugs are not poison.
  • That doctors and hospitals do not cause deaths.
  • Guns are dangerous.
  • World War I "made the world safe for democracy."
  • World War II was for democracy to prevail over tyranny.
  • The Korean War was to "contain communism."
  • The Iraq war was to find and destroy "weapons of mass destruction."
  • Paper money is wealth.
There is a science and massive effort to create and manipulate public opinion in America.

Do you remember the reason? It's for conformity and control.

The nature of government is to perpetually grow, and the nature of politics and politicians is for wealth and... They represent government, not you.

Governments and politicians mask their agendas and create illusions to deceive and misrepresent.

Governments, bureaucrats and politicians look upon the public as a herd that should be deceived and led for the benefit of government and the elite.

Edward L. Bernays, the nephew of Sigmund Freud, is the father of manipulative propaganda in America. Mass persuasion and mass hypnosis is the fundamental of so-called democracy.

This is from Bernays book, Propaganda: "Those who manipulate the unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country. We are governed, our minds molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested largely by men we have never heard of.

In almost every act of our lives, whether in the sphere of politics or business or in our social conduct or our ethical thinking, we are dominated by the relatively small number of persons who understand the mental processes and social patterns of the masses. It is they who pull the wires that control the public mind."

Herr Joseph Goebbels admitted that he learned mass psychology manipulation from the Americans. What is lowest on the agenda of the massive brainwash? What has no commercial value? The answer is public health and personal liberty. The system is historically opposed to these. No judge will rule on any issue of truth about public health or personal liberty. They have dumbed us down. We are on the animal farm. They rape us daily and we never question their criminal intentions.--

Every thing is Significant !

There's nothing tiny or insignificant.

Everything is significant.

And everything flows on the same basis of Laws. Whether you are looking at world events or something that's happening in your kitchen drawer, broad and important, or narrow and seemingly insignificant, there's potential for connection or disconnection in either case. And it is only the connection or the disconnection that is of really any importance.
